Conference Affiliations

HKIS belongs to two local leagues: Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation (HKSSF) and International School Sports Federation (ISSFHK). Additionally, they belong to four overseas conferences: Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) which serves twelve varsity sports and five fine arts activities. Junior Varsity teams compete in season ending volleyball, basketball, and soccer competitions in JPAC. China Cup offers nine competitions for both JV and Varsity teams with our peer schools of International School Beijing and Shanghai American School Puxi Campus. HKIS recently joined the Association of China and Mongolia International School (ACAMIS) which will provide additional opportunities for our athletes to compete.

Description of the High School Athletics Program

HKIS believes in a seasonal sport program. Many of our teams include a try out phase which can range from highly competitive to less competitive depending on the team size and interest. Each season, we offer at least one sport which is “non-cut”. These non-cut sports are: Rugby (Season 1), Cross Country (Season 2) and Track & Field (Season 3).

Varsity Teams

The goal for our varsity teams is to find success at the highest level, while exhibiting good sportsmanship and respect for opponents and officials. Varsity team rosters will be selected by the coaching staff after the tryouts have been completed. Varsity team members will be expected to commit to all scheduled practices and competitions, including APAC, China Cup and other Invitational Tournaments as well as local competitions.

Junior Varsity Teams

Junior varsity teams should provide the development of skills to prepare athletes for Varsity status in the future. Commitment to training, teamwork, sacrifice, communication, and leadership skills are all parts of the solid foundation for athletic development. Because the majority of our league divisions are age-determined, JV teams are made up of 9th and 10th grade students.

Exceptions:

  • 8th grade athletes who are too old to participate in ISSFHK and HKSSF will be allowed to try out for HS JV teams.
  • China Cup has an exception for baseball and softball. This exception allows schools to use 8th grade players to round out rosters.
  • 11th grade athletes who are still age eligible for JV teams
