Welcome Letter

The High School Athletics Program offers a wide variety of sports options for its students. With seventeen Varsity level sports, and nearly fifty teams within those sports, we hope that every student will find their place in a Dragon Uniform. We believe that participation is driven by one’s passion for sports and an understanding of the importance of physical activity. As well as providing opportunities for students to practice life-long character development through commitment, sacrifice, determination, resiliency and sportsmanship.

Hong Kong International School believes in a seasonal philosophy in High School Sports. Most teams run in eight to ten week seasons for training and competing. HKIS is a member of two local leagues: the International School Sports Federation (ISSFHK) and the Hong Kong School Sports Federation (HKSSF). HKIS also belongs to four overseas school sport conferences: the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) which runs across twelve sports and five fine arts-performing events. Additionally, our younger athletes have the opportunity in the Junior Varsity Activities Conference (JPAC) which runs across three sports, and China Cup which runs across nine sports (for both Varsity and JV teams). HKIS has recently joined a fourth international league that is sure to provide additional opportunities in the years to come. The Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACMIS) offers sporting opportunities that the other international leagues do not. Through these competitions, our high school teams promote educational athletics, which is defined as a program that teaches sports skills, but more importantly, advocates and promotes leadership, goal-setting, team work, decision-making, overcoming adversity and healthy competition.

The purpose of High School Athletics is to provide opportunities for our student athletes to compete against local and regional teams while building team skills and community. Although winning is important to us, we do not believe in “winning at all costs.” Additionally, these experiences should remain in line with the Long Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity and become an extension of the programs offered in Middle School. Athletics is part of the overall Co-Curricular Program at HKIS, and is reviewed regularly, with our most recent review being conducted from 2019-2020.

This handbook serves as a reference for parents and athletes joining HKIS. It is a collection of policies, procedures, and rules for our program and the conferences we compete in. Please review at your convenience and should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Andrea Clark, HKIS High School Activities & Athletics Coordinator at aclark@hkis.edu.hk or 3149-7156.
